Transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) is a progressive technique to treat patients with coronary artery disease and severe chest pain. It is only applicable for patients who are not candidates for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or angioplasty, and is not used until other appropriate options have failed to resolve the problem. But when used, it can be an effective treatment option.
During the procedure, a high-powered laser is used to create small holes in the heart. This minimally invasive procedure helps encourage the growth of small blood vessels. The small, tube-like openings created by the TMR laser restore blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle. Patients who have had TMR surgery usually have increased exercise capacity and pain relief, allowing them to resume many activities.
TMR may:
- Improve the patient’s quality of life
- Offer significant long-term angina relief
- Reduce cardiac-related hospitalizations after procedure
- Reduce the need for anti-angina and cardiac medications
